Emergencies

Do you know the Japanese word for “HELP?” You should yell “TA-SU-KE-TTE!” at the top of your voice if you are attacked either on the streets or in your apartment. Even though the information is in all your guidebooks, would you be able to report your whereabouts in Japanese (like your address?) Do you know the emergency number? If you feel unable to dial and report a crime yourself, you can make arrangements with a neighbor or Japanese-speaking friend to make the call.

All embassies recommend that any citizen of their country who will reside in Japan for more than 3 months register with the embassy or the nearest consular office. Registration confirms your identity as a citizen of your country and it may make it easier to provide you with assistance in emergency situations. You will need your passport or a photocopy of the description pages of your passport with you for registration.
